Florist hit hard by Covid-19 gets her business back on track at Alnwick Market

News
A helping hand

Alnwick-based florist Sharon Wright lost all her wedding clients because of Covid-19. A free stall at Alnwick market has helped her get back in business while wedding venues are closed.

When Covid-19 cancelled weddings earlier this year, florist Sharon Wright said it “was a real blow”. Sharon, the owner of Wild with Love and “a popular and award-winning local florist, specialises in wedding flowers”. She tells the Northumberland Gazette how she lost most of her business overnight when the Coronavirus pandemic shut wedding venues down for the foreseeable future in March.

Thanks to a free stall at Geraud’s Alnwick Market, funded by the Duke of Northumberland’s Northumberland Estates, Sharon Wright’s floristry business is serving customers in the North East once again. “I had always done other floral commissions and I enjoy a challenge” she says. “I changed tack, making bouquets for presents, creating dried flower arrangements and producing other items that I could sell and deliver to fill the gap.”

Northumberland Estates have been offering free pitches at Alnwick Market to small businesses and charities affected by Covid-19. This means they can continue to trade in new ways and generate business without big overheads. It also makes it easier for them to get back on track.

Wild with Love was a big success at Alnwick Market during its first day of trading. Sharon’s floral arrangements and bouquets were a hit with local shoppers and other stallholders were very welcoming. She was back the following Saturday, introducing her business to even more new customers.

Alnwick Market is a busy outdoor market based in the centre of one of Northumberland’s most popular towns. Open every Thursday, Saturday, and the last Friday of every month, traders sell a vibrant mix of food, drink, crafts – and now flowers!
